Getting Started | Bluelab pH Pen for Soil

Before you use the Bluelab Soil pH Pen, you need to calibrate the pen to two pH points.

Calibrate Soil pH Meter

  • Turn the pH pen on.
  • Calibrate to pH 7 by placing probe tip in fresh pH 7 solution.
Wait for reading to stabilise to between pH 6.6 – pH 7.5.
  • Long press the Cal button until CAL is displayed. Release the button. A calibration sequence will start sequentially flashing “0” across the display. After “0000” stops flashing, the sequence is complete. Rinse the probe tip in fresh tap water.
  • Repeat with pH 4 solution.
  • A checkmark will confirm successful calibration.

Operating Soil pH Meter

  • Prepare the soil. Remove the top layer of soil/media from the surface of the sample area.
  • Measure the pH of your soil or substrate.
    • With the storage cap/dibber on the pen, press the Soil pH Pen into the sample area until it reaches the word “Soil” at the top of the dibber. Remove gently from the soil or substrate, leaving a small hole.
    • Remove the storage cap/dibber from the pen gently. Turn the Soil pH Pen on, by pressing the Power button. (The last measurement is recalled for 3 seconds. To turn the pen off, press and hold the Power button until OFF is displayed.) Place pH probe into the hole in the soil or substrate. Do not exert sideways pressure. Wait for the reading to reach a consistent value.
  • Hold Reading – To hold the measurement on the LCD screen, short press the power button. To exit the hold function, short press the power button again.
  • To change temperature units. To toggle between °C and °F, press and hold the Units button, then short press it to switch modes when the display starts to flash. To exit, don’t press anything for 3 seconds.
  • Rinse and place on the storage cap and dibber. To ensure accurate pH measurements, always rinse the probe after use in clean fresh tap water. Then, replace the storage cap/dibber.
  • For field testing, repeat the procedure in different locations and take the average of the measured data to represent the pH of the sample area.

Using Soil pH Meter

  • Use the storage cap/dibber to make a hole in your soil or media. Go as deep as your plant roots.
  • Gently remove the storage cap by unscrewing the cap first and gently pulling to remove the probe. The cap contains KCl solution, so be careful not to spill the liquid.  Salt crusting around the probe is normal.
  • Turn the pen on and insert the probe into the hole. Ensure the probe tip is contacting the soil at the end of the hole. The display will stabilise giving you your pH and temperature measurement.
  • Rinse after use to remove nutrient or soil buildup and replace the storage cap/dibber.
