Greenhouse Heating Mats
The purpose of a greenhouse is to grow plants in controlled environmental conditions. Factors such as temperature and humidity, irrigation, the amount of light or shade, and the application of fertilisers are all controlled to ensure ideal conditions.
Heat mats or greenhouse heating mats are used as seed starting mats to produce starter plants, plants that can later be transferred to grow in open fields when there are more favourable weather conditions or can simply be sold as starter plants.
Germinating Your Seeds
Germinating seeds is the first step in the process of growing your plants. Often, this requires ideal soil temperatures, sufficient water and light for the seeds to germinate. A lack of any of these will result in a poor germination rate and cause you to lose a significant number of your seeds.
To ensure that you get this just right, investing in seed propagation trays that will ensure the successful germination of your seed, is a wise investment. In addition, heat trays will speed up the germination process, shortening the overall plant growth time.
How Does a Heat Mat Work?
Ideal temperatures necessary for seeds to germinate in soil are a constant 21° to 23.8°C or 70° to 75°F. This would be -15°C, or 5°F higher than the temperature in the atmosphere. Anything lower than this may produce some germination but at a significantly lowered yield.
As temperatures tend to drop during the night or in very cold weather, having a heat mat placed under your seed tray will ensure that the temperatures remain at a constant ideal.
Heating mats will increase the temperature to germinate your seeds at a faster rate, which in turn will grow them faster. Made of rubber, they are placed on top of a heating cable with a thermostat to adjust and control the temperature.
The seed pot is then be placed on top of the rolled out rubber mat that is placed on a flat surface, providing constant heat to the seed pots or trays that are placed on top. These heavy rubber mats correspond in size to seed flats.
Precautions for Greenhouse Heating Mats
Heating mats should ideally be placed in a dry area that has low air movement. It is a good idea to have an insulation mat on the floor to provide extra safety protection. The rubber mat, or insulation mat as it also known, should be placed near the electrical outlet.
This should be left on throughout the germination period, to avoid changes in temperature that could affect the seeds. It is advisable to place a thermostat sensor into the soil to control and monitor the soil temperature.
