Do All New Trees Need to be Staked?

New trees, like all plants, need water, sunlight, and nutrients. But they may also need extra support to ensure that they grow upright. However, not all young trees need staking; in fact, most don’t. Staking trees that don’t need to be staked may cause the tree to grow fewer roots and develop a weak base.

So, when should you stake a tree?

If the tree is healthy and has a solid root system and sturdy trunk, it probably won’t need staking. Conifers, evergreens, and trees with branches that grow lower to the ground don’t require staking either. However, you should stake your tree if:

It’s a bare-root tree or has a small root ball
It’s planted in areas where there is a lot of footfall, for example, on a street
It can’t stand on its own or it starts to lean
It’s top heavy with no lower branches
